Tây Hồ wraps around West Lake (Hồ Tây), Hanoi's largest lake, north-west of the city centre. It is a largely residential area with a large expatriate community, international schools and a busy café and restaurant scene off Xuân Diệu street.

Tây Hồ is known as a high-end residential area with a large population of expatriates, drawn by its schools, hospitals and restaurants. Xuân Diệu is the main street into the expat enclave, and the streets running off it and Tô Ngọc Văn are where cafés and international restaurants cluster.

Life here centres on the water: the lake has a 17-kilometre shoreline lined with gardens, hotels and restaurants, and Thanh Niên road runs between West Lake and the smaller Trúc Bạch Lake. The Quảng Bá night flower market, running since 1996, is one of the largest night flower markets in Vietnam.

Landmarks

• Trấn Quốc Pagoda (Chùa Trấn Quốc): Hanoi's oldest pagoda, on a small island reached by a causeway on the lake's south-eastern shore.
• Tây Hồ Temple (Phủ Tây Hồ): A temple to Princess Liễu Hạnh on a peninsula jutting into the lake at 52 Đặng Thai Mai; festivals fall on the 3rd day of the 3rd lunar month and the 13th of the 8th.
• Quảng Bá night flower market (Chợ hoa đêm Quảng Bá): A large overnight wholesale flower market that has operated since 1996.
• Lotte Mall West Lake: A large mall facing the lake with an indoor aquarium, KidZania, a cinema and a supermarket, opened in September 2023.
• Nhật Tân Bridge (Cầu Nhật Tân): A cable-stayed bridge with five tall pylons, opened in January 2015, at the northern edge of the area.

Shops, health and schools

• Supermarkets: Annam Gourmet at 51 Xuân Diệu stocks imported groceries. Lotte Mall West Lake (272 Võ Chí Công) includes a Lotte Mart supermarket.
• Cafés and dining: Cafés and international restaurants cluster on Xuân Diệu, the main street into the expat enclave, and on Tô Ngọc Văn and the streets off them.
• Gyms and sport: Elite Fitness Xuân Diệu (51 Xuân Diệu) has a gym, yoga, Pilates and group-class studios, a sauna and a saltwater pool.
• Healthcare: Raffles Medical Hanoi at 51 Xuân Diệu is an international clinic with paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, dental, vaccinations, health screening and an emergency room. It is open daily, but not around the clock: the emergency room works only in clinic hours.
• International schools nearby: The United Nations International School of Hanoi (UNIS, IB from Early Years 3 to Grade 12) and Singapore International School @ Ciputra (primary only) are both in the Ciputra area of Phú Thượng.

Getting around

• Nhật Tân Bridge, built as part of the Ring Road 2 expansion, crosses the Red River at the area's northern end on the route to Nội Bài International Airport.
• Thanh Niên road runs between West Lake and Trúc Bạch Lake, towards Ba Đình to the south.
• Hanoi Metro Line 2 (Nam Thăng Long – Trần Hưng Đạo) will run through Tây Hồ, with stations including Tây Hồ Tây, Bưởi and Hồ Tây; construction began on 9 October 2025 and it is planned to open in 2029.

Good to know

• The lake is big, so where you base yourself matters: the café and restaurant strip is around Xuân Diệu on the eastern shore, while UNIS and the SIS primary campus are in the Ciputra area of Phú Thượng.
• Phủ Tây Hồ draws large crowds on its festival days (3rd day of the 3rd lunar month and 13th day of the 8th).
• The Quảng Bá flower market trades through the night, from about 10 pm until dawn, so expect late-night activity around it.
