There is no single best area in Hanoi, only the right one for how you want to live. Here is the honest version of the three districts expats choose between most.
Tây Hồ (West Lake): the expat heartland
Lakeside calm, the densest cluster of western cafés, restaurants, international schools and serviced apartments, and the easiest soft landing. The trade-off is that it is an expat bubble and priced accordingly. Best for families, newcomers and anyone who wants comfort first.
Ba Đình: green and central
Leafy boulevards, the diplomatic quarter, and a quieter, more local-feeling life that is still minutes from the centre. Fewer western amenities than Tây Hồ, but better value and more character. Best for people who want central without the bubble.
Old Quarter (Hoàn Kiếm): in the thick of it
Walk everywhere, eat everything, and never be bored, at the cost of noise, smaller apartments and constant motion. Best for singles and couples who want energy over space.
