Living in Hai Bà Trưng
Hai Bà Trưng covers central-eastern Hanoi, running out to the Red River. It mixes older streets and a famous café strip with a major university quarter and the large Times City development in the south-east.
This is one of Hanoi's densest inner areas: about 300,000 people lived in roughly 10 square kilometres in 2019, so expect busy streets and plenty of neighbourhood life. Triệu Việt Vương is lined with long-running cafés, among them Cafe Thái at No. 27 and Thọ Cafe at No. 117.
The south-east is dominated by Times City at 458 Minh Khai, a development built between 2011 and 2013 with apartment towers, parks, lakes, a large mall, a hospital and schools. The Hanoi University of Science and Technology is also here.
Landmarks
- Thống Nhất Park (Công viên Thống Nhất): More than 50 hectares of green space around Bảy Mẫu Lake, on the Hai Bà Trưng–Đống Đa edge; built from 1958 by volunteer labour.
- Hai Bà Trưng Temple (Đền Đồng Nhân): Temple to the Trưng Sisters at 12 Đồng Nhân, founded in 1142 and moved here in 1819; a special national heritage site.
- Triệu Việt Vương café street: A stretch of long-established cafés, including Cafe Thái (No. 27) and Thọ Cafe (No. 117).
- Vinpearl Aquarium Times City: Inside Vincom Mega Mall Times City: over 30,000 marine creatures and a 90-metre tunnel.
- Times City fountain show: A show with nearly 700 fountains at 7 pm every night, with extra shows until about 8.30 pm from Friday to Sunday.
Shops, health and schools
- Supermarkets: A supermarket sits within Vincom Mega Mall Times City (basement B1, 458 Minh Khai), alongside 300-plus shops.
- Cafés and dining: Triệu Việt Vương is the classic café street; Vincom Mega Mall Times City adds a broad range of Vietnamese and international restaurants.
- Gyms and sport: California Fitness & Yoga has a club at Times City (building T18, 458 Minh Khai). Thống Nhất Park is where locals walk and exercise.
- Healthcare: Vinmec Times City International Hospital (458 Minh Khai) is JCI-accredited, with an emergency department and Vietnamese and international doctors. Hanoi Friendship Hospital is also in the area, and Bạch Mai Hospital, one of Vietnam's largest, is at 78 Giải Phóng in neighbouring Đống Đa.
- International schools nearby: Vinschool Times City (buildings T35 and T36) offers a Cambridge-based bilingual programme. British Vietnamese International School Hanoi, a bilingual British-curriculum school, is at Royal City, 72A Nguyễn Trãi, in Thanh Xuân.
Getting around
- Vĩnh Tuy Bridge crosses the Red River towards Long Biên; a second, parallel span finished in August 2023 widened the crossing from four to eight lanes.
- Giáp Bát coach station, for long-distance coaches to the southern provinces and Ho Chi Minh City, is at Km 6 Giải Phóng in neighbouring Hoàng Mai.
Good to know
- Thống Nhất Park gets especially crowded in summer as people come to escape the heat.
- Times City is a self-contained township, with a mall, supermarket, hospital, school and gym within the one development.
- The area is compact but dense, at roughly 30,000 people per square kilometre in 2019.
