The curricula, in plain English
International Baccalaureate
A not-for-profit programme based in Geneva and taught in thousands of schools worldwide, often shortened to IB. It has three stages: the Primary Years Programme (ages 3 to 12), the Middle Years Programme (11 to 16) and the Diploma Programme (16 to 19), which universities around the world accept. The most portable choice if you may move again.
British curriculum
Based on the National Curriculum for England: early years to age 5, then primary and secondary, with the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) exams at 16 and A Levels at 18. The natural fit for families heading to British or Commonwealth universities.
American curriculum
Grades from kindergarten to Grade 12 and a high school diploma, usually with Advanced Placement courses: university-level classes that American universities give credit for.
Cambridge International
Programmes and exams from Cambridge University Press and Assessment, part of the University of Cambridge in England, leading to the International General Certificate of Secondary Education at 16 and A Levels at 18. Often taught alongside the Vietnamese curriculum.
Bilingual, English and Vietnamese
The Vietnamese national curriculum taught in Vietnamese alongside an international programme in English. Mainly chosen by Vietnamese families and by families staying in Hanoi for the long term.
National schools
French, Japanese, Korean and Singapore schools teach their home country’s curriculum in its language, so children can move straight back into it.
Choosing an international school in Hanoi
Start with the curriculum
Changing systems mid-school can cost a child a year. If you are likely to move again, an International Baccalaureate school is usually the most portable choice. Families heading to British or American universities should check how a school’s programme lines up with where their children are going next.
Check the commute before you sign a lease
In Hanoi a short distance can be a long drive at school time. Choose the school first, then look for a home on its bus route or within an easy run of the campus. We can shortlist homes around any school you are considering.
Apply early
Popular year groups fill up, and many schools assess and keep waitlists. Starting before you arrive gives you far more choice than applying a few weeks before the move.
Budget for more than tuition
