Living on an arterial: what it actually sounds like

Âu Cơ is not a quiet street and never will be. It is the main road between central Hanoi and Nhật Tân Bridge, which is the route to the airport, and it sits on the Red River dyke. Anyone selling it to you as a peaceful lakeside address is selling you something else.

The widening is finished, and that changes the street

What has changed is that the widening of the Âu Cơ to Nghi Tàm dyke road is officially complete, after several years of works. This page used to say that the completion had been reported and that we had not checked it ourselves. We have now: our team in Hanoi confirmed it in August 2026. If you last looked at Âu Cơ in 2023 and wrote it off, look again.

One caveat came with that confirmation and it is worth passing on in full, because you may be signing for a year. Officially complete does not mean nothing further will ever happen on this road. It means the widening is done. Ask us what the street is like this month.

A wholesale flower market that opens at 11pm

The second thing to know is the flower market. Chợ Hoa Quảng An, at 236 Âu Cơ, is Hanoi’s largest night flower market. Trading runs from roughly 11pm to midday, with the wholesale rush between 2am and 5am, supplying florists across the north. It is one of the genuinely lovely things about living here and it is also lorries, motorbikes and voices at three in the morning. Which of those it is depends entirely on how far from number 236 you are and which way your bedroom faces.

What Tứ Liên Bridge will do next

The third thing is the next project. Tứ Liên Bridge is the largest single item in Hanoi’s 2026 to 2030 programme for this ward, at roughly 24 hectares, and its approach runs along the Âu Cơ and Nghi Tàm corridor. If you are looking near the Nghi Tàm junction, ask us what is happening there now.

What is within a hundred metres

Within a hundred metres of the road there is a lot: Loving Hut, True Viet, Burger and Buns, Bé Ne Bakery, Saint Honoré, The Oasis, Circle K, WinMart, the Greek embassy, Vietfighter gym, PetHealth veterinary hospital, Phan Chu Trinh High School and Gelato Italia. It is a functional street to live on. Just know what it is.

Upgrades around West Lake, 2026 to 2030

Hanoi has approved an upgrade programme for the Tây Hồ ward, which covers the West Lake area. Fifty projects are listed for 2026 to 2030, across more than 96 hectares, and 46 of them are publicly funded. They range from roads and schools to parks and improvements to the lake environment. The largest single project is the new Tứ Liên Bridge. Several lakeside streets are named, including Đặng Thai Mai.

The 2026 to 2030 window applies to the programme as a whole. Timings for individual projects are not published, so no one can honestly say which month a given street will be finished, and we will not guess. We asked our team in Hanoi when the works will be finished. The answer, in August 2026, was that it is impossible to say with confidence. That is not us dodging the question. It is the most reliable answer there is, from somebody who lives in Hanoi and knows these streets, and it means that anyone who hands you a firm completion date is guessing. So the question worth asking is not when the works end. It is what is happening outside the address you are considering, and that is a question we can answer.
